We visited Montreal in May of 2024. Montreal is the largest city in Quebec and is set on an island in the Saint Lawrence River. It is named after Mt. Royal, the triple peaked hill at its heart.
We flew from Cleveland through Toronto to Montreal.
We landed and took the 747 bus to downtown.
Our home base for the trip was the Residence Inn downtown. We would highly recommend this hotel. It is next to the Metro Station and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The hotel rooms have full kitchens, the fitness center and breakfast were awesome!
We loved walking around Parc Olympique Le Centre Sportif! The 1976 Summer Olympics took place in Montreal, Quebec.
We LOVED seeing our favorite MLS Team, the Columbus Crew, beat the CF Montreal 3 to 1 at Saputo Stadium. The Montreal fans were very friendly and welcoming!
We walked about 30 minutes from our hotel to the Notre-Dame Basilica. This church opened in 1829 and is located in the Old Montreal District.
We then walked to the Old Port area located in the historic part of Montreal. The port stretches over a mile along the Saint Lawrence River and was used by French fur traders as early as 1611.
The Montreal Clock Tower, also known as the Sailor’s Memorial Clock is located in the Old Port area. The tower marks the entrance to the Old Port and it is dedicated to the seamen who died in the First World War.
The following day we walked to Mount Royal Park, known as “the mountain” to the locals. Here you can view the spectacular views of the skyline.
Saint Louis-Square is an urban square located in Montreal’s Plateau Mont Royal.
Eastern Europeans who settled in Montreal brought their culinary customs, the biggest being smoked meats and bagels.
St-Viateur Bagel Shop – “defining the bagel making since 1957” – did not disappoint!
Poutine was born in rural Quebec in the 1950’s. Poutine is a dish composed of fries, topped with cheese curds and hot gravy. La Belle Province is a fast food restaurant with locations all over Montreal.
A visit to Schwartz’s Deli is a must. A Montreal classic, they have been serving their world famous original smoked meats for over 90 years.
Maple taffy is a sugar candy made by boiling maple sap to a consistency that you can roll on ice. Words cannot describe how awesome this is!
